Ornn

Ornn

Master Tier Champion Guide

Identity

Ornn is the ultimate scaling tank, defined by his unique ability to forge items anywhere on the map and upgrade his team's gear into powerful Masterwork versions. His identity is rooted in team-wide utility and immense late-game power, as he permanently gains bonus stats from all items. This makes him a reliable frontline force who brings unparalleled value to his team the longer the game goes on.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Best-in-Class Scaler: He is the hardest scaling tank in the game, gaining permanent stats and providing team-wide masterwork upgrades that push him far ahead of the competition into the late game.

  • Ultimate Utility and Engage: His ultimate, Call of the Forge God, is one of the best engage tools in League, allowing him to initiate fights from a huge range and apply Brittle (CC setup) to multiple enemies.

  • Unconditional Presence: He can buy non-consumable items anywhere on the map, meaning he can maintain pressure and never loses critical wave time just to complete a purchase.

Weaknesses

  • Low Mobility: Ornn lacks inherent mobility and is not a 1v9 champion. He can easily be rotated on and killed if he overextends past the safety line.

  • Mana Dependency: If you are perma-nuking waves, your mana pool can get destroyed, requiring resource management or specific runes like Manaflow Band or Biscuit Delivery.

  • Vulnerability to True Damage and High Sustain: He struggles significantly against champions that deal large amounts of true damage (like Fiora, Gwen, Camille pre-nerf) or those with insane sustain that can negate his poke (like Warwick).

Laning Phase

The laning phase on Ornn is all about short, smart trading and utilizing his abilities to control the enemy champion, wave, and lane position.

Passive and Item Timing

  • Manage your passive, Living Forge, strategically:

  • If you are low on HP, prioritize building armor, magic resist, or boots before building HP items (like a Ruby Crystal), because HP items have less value the lower your current health pool is.

  • You can use Living Forge to bait opponents into trading with you. When you are higher HP, you can use a Health Potion to the fullest and THEN craft a Ruby Crystal during the trade to maximize the temporary stat boost.

Trading and Poking

  • Ornn’s trades are meant to be short, very damaging, and full of CC.

  • Ornn QQ is Your Poke Tool: Volcanic Rupture (Q) is your main poking and zoning device. Use Q to poke the enemy ONLY when they are taking farm because this gives you the highest chance of landing it.

  • Short Trade Combo: The fundamental trading pattern is Q W E away. This allows you to proc Grasp of the Undying and quickly disengage.

  • Level 1 Caution: If your opponent has a really strong Level 1 (like Sett or Darius), you must give priority completely and don't trade with them.

  • Cooldown Discipline: Do not play aggressively if your cooldowns are not up, as you will get severely punished; Ornn cannot match an enemy with auto attacks even if he has Grasp of the Undying up.

Macro and Teamfights

Ornn’s mid and late game is characterized by his role as a frontline team fighter and objective controller.

Macro Focus

  • Ornn is a scaling tank, so your main focus is to mirror pressure, clear waves, and rotate.

  • Win Condition: Your main focus is on securing Baron Nashor or Dragon because that is your win condition.

  • Map Positioning: Do not overextend. Focus on clearing waves and avoid being aggressive past the line where you can be easily rotated on.

  • Vision: You should always buy Sweeper for your team, as you are the frontline and will be facechecking bushes a lot.

Teamfighting Styles

  • Your primary goal in any fight is to soak up damage and CC as efficiently as possible.

  • Front to Back: Your role is simple: soak damage while your backline deals damage.

  • Patience with E: Hold your Searing Charge (E) until you are near a wall or terrain so you can get the knockup and utilize its full CC potential.

  • Brittle Application: You don't always need to proc the Brittle debuff yourself. If you are in a 5v5 team fight, let your high-damage allies (like Jhin, Morgana, or Syndra) proc the Brittle, as they might one-shot the target.

  • Against Assassin/Dive Comps: You must stick really close to your ad carries.

  • Build defensively, using items like Knight's Vow to protect them.

  • You should be ready to Searing Charge into a knockup at any time.

  • Focus on kiting backwards and using your Ultimate defensively to prevent your carries from being one-shot.

  • Ultimate Usage: Use Call of the Forge God (R) as your big engage. Be cautious of champions like Braum, Samira, and Yasuo, who can make your ultimate disappear. When facing them, your main engage should shift to Searing Charge (E), and R should be used defensively.

Tips & Tricks

Abilities

WW
  • Bellows Breath (W) is excellent for interrupting enemy CC abilities, such as Blitzcrank's Rocket Grab, Thresh's Death Sentence, or even knockups from Baron Nashor and Dragon.

EE
  • Searing Charge (E) can be used as a dash onto your opponent in the laning phase to run them down, but remember it can be interrupted by random CC or hooks.

Item Synergies

Starting Item

ALWAYS take Doran's Shield for the first base and the sheer sustain in lane.

Prioritizing Health & Armor

When fighting champions with high true damage or burst, buying Chain Vest (A-tier component) and Negatron Cloak (S-tier component) quickly is key for tankiness. You should never buy the Ruby Crystal component when building a defensive item like Jak’Sho, The Protean early, as sitting on it 'sucks'.

Masterwork Slotting

Remember that Ornn upgrades the Masterwork item that is closest to the top left first slot on your inventory. If you have Heartsteel in slot 6 and Jak'Sho in slot 1, Jak'Sho will be upgraded first.

Boots Choice

Plated Steelcaps are built when the enemy has 3 or more auto-attacking AD users. Mercury's Treads are built into 3 AP users or heavy CC compositions that you cannot dodge (like Leona, Maokai, Nautilus).

Never Build CDR-focused support items unless needed

While Transcendence gives ability haste, building items like Ionian Boots of Lucidity is only recommended when you don't need resistances and are the only one left to carry the game. Otherwise, focus on defensive Mythics like Jak'Sho, The Protean (very solid) or Heartsteel (which provides high HP and damage, making it bread and butter for carrying).
