Gangplank

Gangplank

Master Tier Champion Guide

Identity

Gangplank is a unique scaling skirmisher who excels at controlling space and dealing massive area-of-effect damage from a distance. You should play Gangplank if you enjoy a high skill-cap champion with a rewarding laning phase and the potential to carry teamfights with well-placed barrel combos. His global ultimate and ability to generate extra gold make him a constant threat across the map.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Excellent Scaling: Becomes a hyper-carry in the late game with massive AoE damage.

  • Global Presence: Ultimate can influence fights and secure kills across the map.

  • Gold Generation: Passive and Q allow him to accelerate his build faster than other champions.

Weaknesses

  • High Skill Floor/Ceiling: Requires significant practice to master barrel mechanics.

  • Vulnerable Early Game: Can be punished by aggressive laners before he gets his key items and levels.

  • Reliant on Barrels: Damage output is significantly lower without effective barrel placement.

Laning Phase

Gangplank's laning phase is focused on farming safely, poking with Q, and mastering the 'Powder Keg minigame' to control the wave and trade effectively.

Barrel Usage

  • View minions as objectives. Place Powder Kegs (E) around them, forcing the enemy to either contest the barrel or play the 'Powder Keg minigame'. Proficiency in this minigame is where Gangplank's power comes from.

Key Power Spikes

  • Level 7: Barrel health decay time shortens from 2 seconds to 1 second.

  • Level 9: This is a major powerspike where you can usually one-shot the back wave with Essence Reaver or its components, allowing you to efficiently farm Silver Serpents and gold.

  • Level 13: Barrel health decay time shortens significantly to 0.5 seconds, which allows Gangplank to 'shine'.

Level 1 Strategy

  • Many Gangplank players start Powder Keg (E) and sit in the middle top bush. They wait for minions to be about to die, then explode the keg as the enemy goes to last hit, dealing damage and applying Trial By Fire (Passive).

Team Fighting & Macro

In the mid to late game, Gangplank transitions into a powerful split-pusher and team-fighter, capable of controlling objectives and deleting squishy targets.

Macro

Farming Priority

You should farm jungle camps and waves mid to late game until you are strong. Generally, you should not group unless you feel powerful enough to contribute.

Global Utility

Use Cannon Barrage (R) throughout the game to assist teammates globally.

Objective Movement

Only move to assist teammates contesting early objectives (like Void Grubs) if your lane state is secured (Gangplank EE.g., the wave is shoved into the enemy tower).

Proxy Strategy

If an enemy top laner like Sion or Singed proxies, you should farm with your passive under the tower, which grants early gold and an early ultimate upgrade.

Team Fighting

Damage Focus

In the late game, Trial By Fire (Passive) deals an insane amount of damage, approximately 300-600 TRUE DAMAGE. You can use a flash auto-attack combined with Parrrley (Q) to deal massive damage.

Objective Setup

When fighting around objectives, setting up Powder Kegs in the Fog of War around entrances allows you to poke and slow the enemy, making it hard for them to fight head-on.

Matchups

Gangplank is especially strong against short-range compositions, forcing them to run into his area-of-effect abilities. He struggles against hyper-mobile or long-range champions like Ezreal or Zeri.

Runes

Grasp of the Undying

Grasp of the Undying is a strong and reliable choice for Gangplank, especially in tougher matchups. It provides excellent sustain in lane through its healing and permanently increases your health. You can easily proc it with your Q (Parrrley) for safe trades, making your laning phase much more manageable.

Arcane Comet (Scaling)

Highly effective because it is guaranteed to apply on barrels, Q, and ultimate. Provides access to Manaflow Band for sustained pressure. Primary Tree: Sorcery (Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Gathering Storm). Secondary Tree: Precision (Cut Down, Legend: Haste).

Place the first barrel down at your maximum Q range (outside the Q range). Walk up, place the second barrel, and Q the first barrel while the second is exploding. This combo is essential for dealing quick damage when an opponent (like Irelia) is on top of you.

Double Passive Reset

This is achieved by auto-attacking an opponent while two barrels are exploding, which applies two stacking instances of Trial By Fire (Passive) damage.

Place two barrels down. As you Q the first barrel, immediately place a third barrel down. This is useful for extending your barrel range when opponents aren't looking, or for hitting targets over walls, such as clearing the entire river or hitting the Dragon/Baron pit.

Flash immediately after using Q on a barrel to cover the distance and connect a one-part barrel combo that would otherwise fail due to range.

Combine Flash with a triple barrel combo to extend the barrel chain even further beyond normal range, useful for catching enemies over thick walls like the Baron pit.

Tips & Tricks

Abilities

PassiveP
  • Abuse this ability as much as you can, as it will allow you to move insanely fast and it also deals tons of damage. During trades, always try to hit the enemy with Trial By Fire before destroying the next Powder Keg.

QQ
  • This ability costs a lot of mana in the early game, so having a Corrupting Potion is recommended. Abuse Grasp of the Undying procs with Q, but prioritize CS'ing if you're having a hard time in lane.

WW
  • Time yourGangplank WW carefully to cleanse CC. Avoid using it unless it's life-threatening, especially against champions with low CC cooldowns. In long fights, save it for the last CC ability the enemy uses.

EE
  • The health of the Powder Kegs will decay every 2 seconds from level 1 to 6, once you reach level 7, the decay rate drops to 1 second and at level 13, it will decay every 0.5 seconds. This means Gangplank reaches a strong power spike at these levels. Learn how to use the barrels at each level.

  • Levels 1-6: Place barrels on yourself to zone the enemy and hit them once to make them decay faster. Placing barrels in bushes is also a good strategy.

  • Levels 7-12: You no longer need to hit the barrels to make them tick faster. Memorize the timing to effectively use them in trades.

  • Levels 13+: This is the ultimate power spike. You should know how to time yourGangplank QQ's and AA's to execute barrel combos.

RR
  • Cannon Barrage (R) procs The Collector's execute effect on enemies below 5% HP.

  • The recommended default first upgrade is Fire At Will, as it increases consistency, damage per second, and slow application. Death's Daughter is typically the standard second upgrade choice, offering a massive chunk of TRUE damage useful for sniping kills.

  • During lane, always look at the map to see if Ulting somewhere can make a difference. It does tons of damage, and sometimes you can even use it to clear huge waves.
