Zilean

Zilean

Master Tier Champion Guide

Identity

Zilean is a utility-focused Control Mage whose identity revolves around the manipulation of time to dictate the flow of any fight. You should play Zilean if you enjoy a supportive, high-impact playstyle that focuses on enabling your teammates to carry, rather than being the primary damage dealer. His ultimate, Chronoshift, is one of the most powerful defensive spells in the game, capable of completely negating an enemy's burst or assassination attempt by giving a key ally a second life. Combined with his potent slows, speed-ups, and area-of-effect stuns, he provides a safety net that allows his team to play far more aggressively. Mastering Zilean requires exceptional game sense and positioning—knowing who to protect and when to apply your control is the key to unlocking his game-winning potential.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • High utility with a powerful revive ultimate.

  • Excellent crowd control with an area-of-effect stun.

  • Strong scaling into the late game.

  • Can control the pace of team fights with slows and speed-ups.

Weaknesses

  • Weak laning phase and vulnerable to ganks.

  • Reliant on skillshots to be effective.

  • Low damage output compared to other mid laners.

  • Immobile and susceptible to assassins.

Laning Phase

Early Game Strategy

  • Zilean’s primary goal in the early game is to get as much CS as possible and reach the mid-game/first item without falling majorly behind.

  • Use Corrupting Potion and TP to refill HP and Mana.

  • You can be down 10 CS and still be in a good spot. Do not attempt to force solo kills.

  • In bad matchups, it is completely fine to go down in CS; do not die. Keep the wave on your side (freeze it) near your tower to maintain safety and gank threat.

  • Against lane pushers (Zilean EE.g., Ryze, Victor), you need high HP and Mana sustain to avoid being pinned under the tower, where Zilean struggles to CS.

  • Against assassins (Zilean EE.g., Fizz), focus on building defensive items early (e.g., Merc Treads, Kindlegem) to prevent them from snowballing. Zilean hard-counters assassins in team fights, so surviving the lane ensures victory later.

Team Fighting & Macro

Mid Game Macro

Zilean's mid-game revolves around using Teleport to influence other lanes and act as a secondary carry, providing utility and control in skirmishes.

Teamfighting

Zilean plays like a control mage, ideally positioning safely behind his team. You want fights to be long so you can get multiple ability rotations.

Priority 1: Who to Ultimate (R)

Generally, ult the most fed or strongest member of your team (Zilean EE.g., your AD carry or a high-impact bruiser). Prioritize allies who have items and cooldowns. You must adapt in the moment; sometimes, you must ult the first person who is about to die, regardless of their priority.

Priority 2: Who to Speed Up (E)

Use E on allies who benefit most from movement speed (Zilean EE.g., initiating supports, Riven, Hecarim, or AD Carries like Jinx).

Priority 3: Who to Slow Down (E)

Use E on enemy targets who are crucial to stop (Zilean EE.g., enemy bruisers, or enemy carries who will be forced to flash or reposition).

Overall Teamfight Tip

Focus on dealing with the enemy's biggest threat and helping your most important member. Be ready to update your priorities as the fight progresses and allies die or enemies engage. Even if you use your abilities suboptimally, staying alive and using them at all is key to success.

Tips & Tricks

Abilities

PassiveP
  • Use this on your main carry (Zilean EE.g., AD Carry, Riven, Hecarim) or to hit crucial breakpoints (like level 5 to 6 for R, or 10 to 11 for Rank 2 R) right before a team fight.

QQ
  • A skill shot that sticks to targets (allies, enemies, camps) and detonates after three seconds, stunning if a second bomb hits the same unit.

  • Place bombs on the floor to zone enemies or control an area.

  • Put your bomb on an engaging teammate to carry the AOE stun deep into the enemy team.

  • Use Q-Zilean WW on allies revived by your ultimate or exiting Zhonya's for an immediate stun on grouped enemies.

WW
  • Reduces the cooldown of your other basic abilities by 10 seconds, enabling the Q-Zilean WW double bomb.

EE
  • Cast on allies to speed them up, or enemies to slow them down for two and a half seconds.

  • The most common use of Flash is to reposition to Flash E the target first, slowing them for an easy Q-Zilean WW follow-up.

RR
  • Marks an allied champion for five seconds. If they die, they are revived.

  • It is better to cast R too early than too late; casting early can provide a five-second period where enemies are hesitant to hit the target.
