Teemo

Teemo

Master Tier Champion Guide

Why you should play Teemo

Teemo's identity is that of a lane bully who transitions into a map control specialist. In lane, he uses his ranged advantage and blinding dart to poke and harass melee champions, making it difficult for them to farm. Post-laning, his mushrooms provide vision and create deadly traps, controlling key areas of the map and making him a constant threat.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Consistent Viability: Teemo is one of the few ranged top laners that remains a strong champion from Iron through to Challenger.

  • Dominant Trading: Teemo operates on a "100 to zero trading mindset", aiming to deal damage to the opponent without taking any damage in return, especially by utilizing Auto-Teemo QQ short trades.

  • Exceptional Objective Setup: Teemo is among the best champions for objective setup, capable of completely covering the jungle around objectives (Dragon, Baron) with mushrooms and vision.

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to All-ins: Most melee champions are favored in a Level 3 all-in against Teemo.

  • No Teleport/Recalling Reliance: As a "no TP champ with bad wave clear and no sustain" (without items/runes), a missed recall timer means the lane is often "completely over".

  • Prone to Kiting/Scaling Drop-off: Teemo struggles against champions with high mobility and is not a champion picked primarily to scale, sometimes needing runes like Nimbus Cloak or Celerity for extra movement speed.

Laning Phase

Start and Skill Order: You should start with Q (Blinding Dart) at Level 1. This is done to prevent opponents from returning auto-attack damage and facilitates quick trades like Auto-Teemo QQ. Two points in E (Toxic Shot) are often taken early, as W (Move Quick) is rarely needed until Level 4 or unless facing an all-in champion like Olaf.

Recall Timing

Trading Philosophy

Wave Management

Versus Melee

Do not crash the wave cleanly. You want to crash it in an "uglier way" so the enemy melee minions are slightly under the tower, but the caster minions are not. This keeps the wave near the tower longer, allowing Teemo to constantly auto-attack the opponent when they try to farm.

Versus Range/Weak Level 1

Use invisibility in the bush to zone the opponent from getting experience (XP). Push the wave quickly to make it bounce back, which prevents the ranged opponent from safely farming and healing under their tower.

Single Summary Runes

Primary Rune

Teemo runs Press the Attack (PTA) over 95% of the time, as it is his "bread and butter" default rune. PTA provides an excellent middle ground for both short trades and extended trades.

Primary Tree (Precision)

Press the Attack, Triumph (or Presence of Mind, which is considered better than Absorb Life), Legend: Alacrity (always taken, as he benefits greatly from Attack Speed), and usually Last Stand. Cut Down is taken into extremely tanky matchups like K'Sante or Tahm Kench.

Secondary Tree (Resolve) - Default

The Resolve tree is crucial and should include Demolish, as it ties into his identity of breaking plates and works well in the early and mid-game. This is usually paired with Bone Plating (into heavy all-in lanes like Riven or Jax) or Second Wind (if the opponent can easily break Bone Plating or for heavy poke).

Alternative Pages

Grasp of the Undying is used into very tanky matchups (Malphite, Gragas) where PTA is tricky to proc and extra sustain is needed. Fleet Footwork is occasionally run as a "safety net" into heavy poke ranged lanes (Aurelia or Kennen), although the source advises defaulting to PTA even in these matchups.

Key Combos

Standard Short Trade

Auto

QQ

Auto

This allows you to proc PTA or get the enhanced Q damage and walk back quickly to drop minion aggro. You should aim to use Q on the very last hit after proc'ing PTA to maximize the damage benefit.

Level 3/6 All-in

QQ

Flash

Ignite

This sequence leverages PTA, the Q auto-reset, and then lets the opponent bleed out from the poison and Ignite damage over time.

Tips & Tricks

Abilities

QQ
  • Teemo QQ can be used to buffer through hard crowd control (CC), such as a Shen taunt or a Jax stun, allowing you to prevent the enemy from getting extra auto-attacks onto you while you are immobilized.

RR
  • Avoid randomly spamming mushrooms in bushes. Better players hold onto their mushrooms for skirmishes or trades. When attacking an enemy with R, it is more effective to ulty the minions nearby them so the AoE pop from the shroom hits the champion.

WW
  • Do not use W immediately when an opponent engages. Hold it until the very last moment to get the burst of movement speed needed to catch up or escape just before they leave your range.

PassiveP
  • You can pop invisibility just before entering a trade to gain the attack speed steroid provided by the passive.

Item Synergies

Farming/Camps

Teemo is an underrated champion for taking jungle camps (especially with one mushroom) because he can blind large monsters like Gromp, reducing the damage he takes.

Itemization (Anti-Heal)

If facing heavy healing champions (Warwick, Zac, Vladimir, Aatrox), you should purchase the Oblivion Orb early, typically right after Tier 2 boots.

Summoner Spells

Default to Ignite and Flash every game. Exhaust is a viable alternative into champions with extremely strong all-ins, such as Riven or Kennen, to block their burst.
