Master Tier Champion Guide
Mordekaiser is a versatile, well-rounded AP Bruiser whose primary identity revolves around possessing the best spell in the game for isolating enemies: his Ultimate (R). You should play Mordekaiser if you want a champion who is effective at winning his lane, excelling in the sidelane, and dominating team fights. His ultimate allows him to remove high-impact disruption or key carry/enchanter pairings from a fight, making it much easier for your team to function. Mordekaiser is also versatile in his builds, capable of filling the role of a front line tank or an AP damage threat depending on team needs. Mastering him requires patience—holding his powerful spells for the most opportune moment rather than rushing in.
Ultimate Isolation Power: Mordekaiser removes key enemy threats (carries, enchanters, flankers) from team fights.
Sidelane and 1v1 Dominance: He is built around 1v1ing, especially with Ignite, and is one of the strongest champions in the sidelane, capable of creating numbers advantages (5v4s).
Build and Role Versatility: He can adapt his build path (full AP burst, AP Bruiser, or full tank) based on the game state and can serve as the team's reliable front line.
Vulnerable Pre-Level 6: He is quite vulnerable to enemy ganks before unlocking his Ultimate, which is his primary survival tool.
Relies on Patience: If players rush his Ultimate or Flash into a fight immediately, they are easily outplayed, making patience essential for successful fights.
Low Intrinsic Mobility: Mordekaiser lacks natural mobility tools, meaning he must position ahead of time to avoid being late to objectives or fights.
Mordekaiser’s core goal is creating a stable early game to survive high vulnerability to ganks until his Level 6/Tier 2 boots power spike, which he then uses to guarantee a kill by freezing the wave outside his tower and all-inning with his ultimate.
In specific matchups where you are clearly stronger (like Yorick) and the enemy jungler is known to be slow (like Lillia), you can look for Level 2 or 3 all-ins, especially if you take Ignite.
These early all-ins are often made possible by stacking Conqueror and your passive quickly. However, this is risky and not advised as the primary game plan due to pre-6 vulnerability.
The ideal time to use your Ultimate is when the wave is bouncing back or frozen outside your tower.
Do not ult an opponent near their tower, as they can walk to the tower within the Death Realm, causing you to take turret aggro.
When ready to all-in, let the wave come back, use your Ultimate, and use combat summoners (Ghost/Ignite) to secure the kill. The ultimate is also excellent for setting up ganks, as your jungler can wait outside the Death Realm for the opponent to exit.
Doran's Shield: Take Doran's Shield in matchups where you will face poke or constant trading (E.g., GP, Kenen, Jace, Fiora). If you are ever unsure, default to Doran's Shield as it is the safer option.
Doran's Ring: Take Doran's Ring in easy matchups or against champions who are weak early (E.g., Sion, Aatrox), as it provides slightly more early damage and helps with last hitting.
Avoid forcing early aggression unless you are absolutely sure of the matchup and enemy jungle pathing.
Play defensively by ping-ponging the wave (crashing three or letting the enemy crash wave three).
Your primary power spike is level six and your first recall. Aim to base around 5:00 to 5:30 to purchase Tier 2 boots.
If you maintain stable high HP and are even or ahead by level six, you are in a great position to secure a kill.
Maximize team advantage by utilizing strong side-laning to push the wave opposite the objective, forcing a crucial 5v4 fight where extreme patience is required to hold the ultimate and isolate the highest impact enemy champion.
Use Mordekaiser's strong sidelaning ability to create a 5v4 situation around an objective (
E.g., Baron or Dragon).
Before the objective spawns, push the opposite sidelane (
E.g., bot lane for Baron) all the way in.
Once an enemy champion is forced to respond and is stuck farming under their Tier 2 or Tier 3 tower, rotate quickly to the objective to force a fight.
If your opponent leaves the lane, you have great threat on towers, especially with items like Nashor's Tooth.
Patience is everything. Hold your Ultimate. The threat of Mordekaiser's ultimate makes the enemy backline scared to walk up and allows your team to operate.
Prioritize ulting key targets, flankers, or primary engage champions who disrupt your backline or rely heavily on coordination.
Flanking Kennen, Fiddlesticks, or a high-damage assassin like Katarina.
The goal is to disrupt their combo or ability usage. Even if you don't secure the kill, making them waste their Ultimate (like Kennen or Nilah) is a win for your team.
In high-pressure situations where you are focused, you can occasionally ult a non-threatening target (like an enemy support) to save yourself and escape if ulting a primary target would lead to your immediate death.
Get into position ahead of time as Mordekaiser has low inherent mobility. Use nearby jungle camps (like the Scuttle Crab or Blue Buff) to stack your passive and W shield just before entering the fight for maximum durability and damage.

QBe aware that you are locked into an animation while casting Q; hold the spell if you need to dodge incoming crowd control or key abilities.
The damage is increased if the target is isolated (away from minions or other champions).
W
W can be cast once for a shield, and a second time for healing.
Avoid a common mistake: You are locked out of using W while Q is channeling. Always press W first to shield before casting Q if you need immediate defense.
If you use W for the shield, you cannot stack new W value until you cast it again for the heal.
If taking DoT damage (
E.g., Liandry’s burn) before recalling, use W; the DoT damage will not stop your base.
EYou can cast E backwards to knock away an opponent who is chasing you or attacking you level one.
E can pull people over thin walls in rare instances.
RUltimate removes placed map objects: If an enemy champion uses an ability that places an object on the map (Kindred R, Heimerdinger turrets, Illaoi tentacles, Yorick Maiden), your ultimate will remove it when they enter the Death Realm.
Dodging: You can successfully dodge incoming skill shots (
E.g., Lux Q, Smolder R) by ulting an enemy champion just before the skill shot connects.
CC Buffer: If you cast your Ultimate just before getting hit by crowd control, you can sometimes buffer the ultimate and complete the cast before the CC lands.
Counter-play Awareness: Know which champions can cancel your Ultimate: Any ability that blocks CC (Olaf R, K'Sante W, Gangplank W) will cancel the channel. Graves/Quinn blinds can also cancel the ultimate, but it will not incur the full cooldown.
Protobelt (if rushed)
This item counts as an auto-attack reset. Using Protobelt-Auto-
Q-Auto is an easy way to quickly proc your passive.
W + Lich Bane
If you build Lich Bane, casting W for the shield and then recasting W for the heal grants two Sheen procs, which is great for breaking down towers.
Protobelt + Rylai's
Protobelt’s active applies Rylai's Crystal Scepter's slow, making it easier to land subsequent spells.
