Master Tier Champion Guide
Kennen is a lane-dominant AP top laner whose identity revolves around poking down opponents and executing game-changing teamfight flanks. He excels at controlling the lane with ranged auto-attacks and abilities, creating a health advantage that he converts into objective control. His true power is unleashed in teamfights, where his ultimate, Slicing Maelstrom, allows him to dive the enemy backline and deliver massive AoE damage and stuns.
Dominant Laning Phase: Kennen is a strong lane bully against most melee top lane champions, allowing him to gain an early lead, dictate wave states, and pressure opponents who cannot trade effectively into his range.
Game-Changing Team Fight Ultimate: His ultimate, Slicing Maelstrom (R), is exceptionally powerful, especially when combined with Flash, making him one of the strongest flankers in the game capable of delivering massive AOE damage and crowd control to the enemy backline.
High Survivability/Outplay Potential: He has tools like Lightning Rush (E) for quick movement and dodging, and the ability to combine his ultimate with Zhonya's Hourglass to become untargetable while dealing damage.
Vulnerable When Low HP: Kennen is easily punished by champions with strong all-in potential (such as Riven, Fiora, Jax, or Malphite) if he falls to low HP, as they can engage and destroy him.
Weak All-in from Full Health: Unless the groundwork has been laid by chipping down the opponent's health bar, attempting an all-in from full HP is usually unsuccessful against most top laners.
Poor Side Lane Scaling: Kennen is often weak in the side lane against dedicated split-pushers and dueling bruisers (like Riven, Fiora, Jax, Camille) unless he is already substantially ahead.
Kennen's primary goal in the laning phase is to abuse his range against melee opponents to continuously poke them down, ensuring they cannot reach full health to attempt an all-in.
Ideally, you want to force your opponent to base before you so you can stay in lane long enough to get your Tier 2 Boots (like Sorcerer's Shoes) on your first base.
Assume you will be targeted by the enemy jungler. Play around the jungle pathing and timers. When you are vulnerable (pushed up, no vision), respect the timing by staying full HP and holding onto Lightning Rush (E). Successfully drawing pressure to the Top Lane is still valuable, as it helps the rest of your map.
You should almost always start with an AD starting item because Kennen's base AD (48) is extremely low, making last-hitting difficult without it. The default is Doran's Blade (for AD and HP sustain against all-in champions). You might use Long Sword if rushing Static Shiv.
Flash is mandatory. Teleport (TP) is recommended almost every game for strong macro and flanking potential, though Ignite can be taken in certain favorable or high-sustain matchups (like Sylas or Fiora/Renekton in lower ELO) to secure a kill lead.
Kennen prefers small trades. Use Aery and Scorch to chip away at the enemy's HP. You must maintain high HP yourself to prevent the opponent from seeking an all-in.
Aim to crash the biggest wave possible (often a three-wave crash). This exposes the opponent to your auto-attack poke while they focus on farming under their tower. Once you have crashed, you should look to freeze the wave just outside your tower to deny CS/XP and punish them if they step up.
Kennen is heavily reliant on his ultimate. After using your ultimate in a fight (regardless of the outcome), you should reset (base) immediately. Do not try to stick around and pressure with only QWE; use the gold, heal up, and get ready for the next ultimate usage.
Because Kennen is weak in the side lane against major split-push threats, his macro priority is to neutralize the side lane (set the wave to even or push one wave past the midpoint) before rotating. This forces the opponent to spend time clearing the wave instead of pressuring your Tier 2 tower.
Once the side lane is neutralized, look to make plays by either setting up at a neutral objective (Herald/Dragon) or camping a bush in the enemy jungle to cheese a pick on a rotating champion (like a support, mid laner, or jungler).
Kennen's team fighting relies almost entirely on flanking from the side or back, often starting from the fog of war in the jungle. You should never front-line.
The ultimate goal is to R-Flash onto the enemy carries (ADC/APC). However, do not engage instantly if they are ready to react. You should wait for key enemy escape abilities (like Zeri's Dash) or crowd control to be used before committing your full combo.
Fights are significantly easier to flank in the jungle, especially around neutral objectives (Dragon, Baron, Herald), because there are many avenues of approach the enemy cannot easily cover. Avoid flanking through the lane near towers, as this is predictable.
Plan TP flanks ahead of time by placing deep wards where the enemy is unlikely to spot them (
E.g., river bush or deep jungle). A well-planned TP flank can decide the game.
Max Damage Hard Engage
E
R

W
E is used first for movement speed and attack speed. W must be used for AOE damage and applying a quick passive stack/stun to everyone hit by R (more important than Q). Q can be thrown if time permits before Zhonya's.
Disengage/Kiting
Q
E
WUse Q for the initial slow/stack. E dashes through the target to reposition, and W pops the stun, allowing you to kite them down the lane.
Quick Passive Poke (Q Blocked)
WUsed when opponents hide behind creeps to block Q. The guaranteed auto-attack applies the passive stack, and W active procs the damage/stun.
Protobelt Auto Reset

WUses Protobelt as an auto-attack reset to quickly get two autos and W passive down for a quick stun/trade.
QLook to land a Thundering Shuriken (Q) ahead of time to apply one passive stack on the enemy. When you later execute your all-in (
E-Flash), the Q cooldown will be ready, guaranteeing your highest damage spell hit because the enemy is already stunned.
Use Q to cancel the long wind-up animation of Kennen's basic auto-attack, allowing you to deal your damage faster.
WWhen performing a combo, ensure you use the W active before your passive stacks fully stun the target. Using W active on a target with one or two passive stacks ensures you get the extra damage from the active W ability itself, maximizing trade damage.
RKennen can cast Slicing Maelstrom (R) and immediately use Zhonya's Hourglass (or Stopwatch). The ultimate continues to damage and stun enemies while you are untargetable and invincible.
Use R, then Flash (
R-Flash) instead of Flash, then R (Flash-R), as this is slightly quicker and harder for opponents to react to.
If an opponent (like Jax or Riven) is about to jump or dash onto you to all-in, cast your Ultimate (R) down before they land. This ensures they immediately take damage and are eventually stunned, resulting in a better trade than if you wait until after they have committed their CC.
