Master Tier Champion Guide
Jax is a high-skill ceiling champion who excels as a 1v1 duelist in the sidelane. His kit is designed around his passive, Relentless Assault, which grants him increasing attack speed with each basic attack. Mastering Jax requires an understanding of his power spikes and the ability to manage his resources effectively to dominate the sidelane and transition into a teamfight threat.
Excellent scaling and dueling potential.
Strong split-pusher.
High burst damage and sustained damage.
Game-changing defensive ability with Counter Strike (E).
Vulnerable to kiting and crowd control.
Weak early game and mana dependent.
Long cooldown on Counter Strike (E).
No built-in sustain.
The key to laning is disciplined wave control and intelligent use of E.
Only use E when you know the trade will be favorable or extended. If E is down, you must fully respect the opponent and be willing to give up CS until its long cooldown is back up.
Lead with movement to position behind the enemy (making them run through you to get back to their tower) before using E.
Value TP highly for securing a base timing after gaining an advantage (
E.g., getting Sheen or Triforce) and returning to lane with full resources.
Prioritize the short W-Grasp poke against champions who punish long trades.
You must be able to decisively crash waves (using E like a 'spirit bomb' to deal AoE damage) to secure safe base timings. If the wave gets stuck, Jax loses resources quickly.
Jax excels in the mid-game by dominating the side lane and creating flank pressure.
Use your side lane pressure to pull opponents away from major objectives (
E.g., push opposite Dragon/Baron). If you cannot make progress 1v1 (e.g., cannot kill them or break the tower), crash the wave and look for a fight.
Avoid front-to-back fighting. Jax is a secondary engage/flanker. Use creative side angles and wait patiently (mastering the 'staring contest') for the enemy's CC/disengage to be used before committing your
Q and E.
Your goal is not necessarily to kill the AD carry, but to make as much space as possible for your team by threatening the backline and buying time, often utilizing the invulnerability of Zhonya's.
This is the standard default page, taken in 60-70% of games, favoring short trades and sustainable laning, especially against rangetops or tanks.
Used in matchups where Jax is forced to fight and all-in, and cannot easily take short trades. Examples include Darius, Gwen, Olaf, Yone, and Yasuo.
W Poke
WShort, safe trade against melees who punish Q engage (Gragas, K'Sante).
All-in (CC End)
W
E
QUsed against strong melee fighters (Darius, Sett) to end the trade in CC, preventing them from retrading. Do not greed an extra auto after the stun.
All-in (Q Lead)
Q
WStandard trade, using Q primarily to jump onto the opponent.
Ultimate Burst
E
R
E
WUses R early to maximize procs, resulting in a quick burst combo.
Surprise Engage

E
QInstant stun that is harder to react to than Q-E.
PAlways try to stack the passive on minions or jungle camps before taking a volatile Level 1 trade (
E.g., Darius, Olaf).
QLead with movement and hold Q for follow-up or disengage; do not always lead with Q, as this allows opponents with disengage (Riven, Gragas) to countertrade.
WPractice buffering W through enemy crowd control (CC) to land damage and preserve Jax's action economy while stunned (
E.g., Riven Q3, Gragas E, Renekton W, Camille E).
E
E blocks auto attack-based CC (e.g., Twisted Fate W, Leona Q). Hold E to save it for a committed fight; do not use it early just because an opponent poked you.
The Slick Back: Walk towards the enemy with E up, then click backwards to fake calling off the trade, before immediately Q/Flash engaging, reducing their reaction time.
R
R grants bonus magic damage every second when active. Activate R as early as possible in an all-in to maximize the number of procs, especially with Lethal Tempo. R-Flash is a quick combo to catch enemies off guard.
