Master Tier Champion Guide
Illaoi is a zone-controlling bruiser who excels at punishing enemies that engage on her. Her identity is built around her powerful 1vX potential, turning ganks into double kills with her ultimate and Test of Spirit. As a dominant split pusher, she draws immense pressure, forcing multiple opponents to deal with her, creating advantages for her team across the map.
Exceptional 1vX Skirmisher: She can 1v2, 1v3, or 1v4 when enemies commit to a fight. Her built-in healing is extensive, especially when tentacles slam and hit enemy champions.
Lane Dominance vs. Melee Engagers: Illaoi prefers playing against melee champions who must engage onto her. She can turn ganks into double kills if she hits her E.
Powerful Split Pushing and Zone Control: She is an AFK split pusher. Her ability to apply constant pressure forces enemies to come and defend, creating opportunities for her team elsewhere on the map.
Vulnerable if Test of Spirit (E) is Missed: Illaoi relies heavily on landing her E. If you miss E, it has a pretty big cooldown, and people will often try to punish you by looking for a trade.
Highly Susceptible to Kiting and Ranged Champions: Champions that are ranged and can kite you (like Soraka or Vayne) where you can never hit your
E, big time counter Illaoi.
High Reliance on Teammate Synergy: Teammates have to understand how to play with somebody split pushing. If her team struggles to capitalize on the map pressure, her efforts may be wasted.
The Laning Phase is crucial for establishing the pressure required for her split push strategy.
Illaoi's optimal strategy revolves around map control and forcing the enemy team to react to her pressure.
The preferred playstyle is to AFK split push. The goal is to draw multiple defenders to the side lane (often bot lane) and pressure the tower using items like Hullbreaker, allowing teammates to take Baron or other objectives.
While split pushing, you can maintain or increase your HP because every time the tentacles slam and hit an enemy champion, you heal.
Team fighting can be rough when the enemy has many champions who can kite you. If a team fight is unavoidable, you are much better off fighting near your already spawned tentacles.
The ultimate, Leap of Faith (R), is an all-in ability. It should be used immediately after hitting E, especially if multiple opponents engage onto you.
If you hit a tank with your
E, your allies can also smack the Spirit, dealing a ridiculous amount of echo damage to the opponent.
Standard All-In (Maximum Damage)
E
R
WHit the enemy champion with Test of Spirit (E). Immediately activate Leap of Faith (R) when enemies are within range. R will spawn tentacles based on the number of nearby enemy champions and makes them slam a lot faster. Use Harsh Lesson (W) spam. The W cooldown is reduced after using R, allowing you to keep slamming with the tentacles.
Wave Clear/Poking
W
QW onto an executable minion or the wave to make a tentacle slam, which helps you push the wave faster. You can also use Q for wave clearing.
PThe passive tentacles are Illaoi's main source of damage. You can also use the tentacles to quickly wave clear.
EThe E is the primary ability, and hitting it is crucial. If you kill the pulled spirit, the opponent will be slowed, and tentacles will automatically spawn and begin slamming the champion.
WBuilding Iceborn Gauntlet is highly effective because every time you use W onto someone, they will be massively slowed. This slow lasts around 2 seconds, which makes it easier to land your
E on the target.
Defiant Dance (W) is a point-and-click ability that can be useful against champions with shields, as you can smack them immediately.
QWhile Q is primarily for wave clearing, weaving it in can help secure kills, as enemies sometimes 'don't expect the tentacle'.
RYou should not use R when you are low HP. You want to use R immediately when you hit the E and anticipate the enemy team engaging onto you.
