Master Tier Champion Guide
Gwen is a high-damage, self-reliant AP bruiser with immense hard-carry potential. She excels at shredding through tanky front lines and punishing divers with her true damage and percent max HP damage. Gwen dominates the sidelane, vacuuming up farm and jungle camps to accelerate her scaling, and poses a significant threat to structures with Demolish and Nashor's Tooth.
Late-Game AP Scaling Beast: Gwen's high AP scalings mean she experiences an immense power spike, particularly upon acquiring Rabadon's Deathcap and Void Staff.
High Sustain and True Damage: Hitting the center of her Q not only grants bonus damage but also converts half of it to True Damage and applies her healing passive, providing sustain during fights.
Untargetability in Fights: Her W, Hallowed Mist, creates a zone where enemies outside the radius cannot target her, and she gains bonus armor and magic resist inside the zone.
Vulnerability to Range: She is extremely weak versus ranged champions and champions with sustained range damage (like Azir or Orianna).
Gank Vulnerability: Gwen is quite easily gankable, especially pre-Level 6, due to her relatively short range and being a full damage champion without early defensive stats.
Reliance on Gold and Resources: She provides no CC or front line to her team, necessitating a greedy playstyle to ensure she accumulates enough gold and experience to be effective. If she is picked at the wrong time (
E.g., into heavy range), she can be completely useless.
Gwen's laning requires a high skill ceiling. Success hinges on effective wave control, smart trading, and proper setup for solo kills.
The best time to look for a solo kill is around Level 6, with the wave frozen outside your tower, allowing you to commit your Ghost and Ultimate without the opponent running away.
Focus on short trades. Use the QE combo to poke and then disengage, chipping down the opponent's HP gradually. Do not take full HP vs. full HP all-ins unless highly favored.
Aim to secure wave push early (where possible) to gain level advantage (Level 2/6 spikes).
Gwen is one of the best front-to-back champions in the game. Her primary role is to stay with her team and shred the enemy tanks and divers as they come in.
Adopt an extremely greedy mindset. Your priority is maximizing gold and experience for yourself.
Play primarily in the side lane (split-pushing). The goal is to create pressure, force an enemy champion (or multiple) to answer you, and thus create a numbers advantage (4v3 or 5v4) elsewhere on the map.
When enemies respond to your pressure, use that time to devour every jungle camp you can find. Once you have two or three items (Riftmaker + Nashor's + Rabaddon's), you one-shot camps quickly.
Position yourself on the opposite side of the next major objective (
E.g., bot lane when Herald/Baron is up, top lane when Dragon is up) to maximize pressure and global map advantage.
When Gwen hits her three-item spike (especially Deathcap), she is at her strongest point relative to other champions. Use this power to force Baron, as Gwen is one of the fastest Baron takers in the game.
Gwen is one of the best front-to-back champions in the game. Her primary role is to stay with her team and shred the enemy tanks and divers as they come in.
Gwen should not be the primary engager. Wait for the fight to break out, then utilize damage to demolish the front line before moving to the backline.
In specific scenarios (
E.g., against elusive front liners or very squishy backlines), threatening the enemy backline from a flank can be effective. The goal is often to simply make it hard for the enemy backline to participate, rather than trying to instantly kill them, especially if they have enchanter support.
Hold your
W. Do not use it immediately upon entering combat. Save it for dodging key abilities or skill shots, or when you are fully committed and need the resistance boost.
Q + E (Damage Redirection)
Q
ECast E during the Q animation to move your character and redirect the Q damage toward the new position. This is the most important combo to master.
Auto Attack Reset
EAuto attack + E + Auto attack is an extremely smooth sequence that cancels the auto attack animation.
Q + E + Auto (Smooth Trade)
Q
EUse Q + E and then input an Auto attack immediately before the Q animation finishes for a smooth trading pattern.
Flash Extension (Q)
Q
If your opponent flashes away during your Q animation, you can follow them with a flash (Q + Flash), and the Q damage will still connect.
Max Range Engagement (Q)
Q
E
Q + E + Flash can be chained together to close a significant distance.
Max Range Engagement (R)
R
E
Casting E during the R animation (R then E) will extend the ultimate distance. This can also be chained with flash for maximum range: R + E + Flash.
PCenter Q Focus: Have a hyper focus on hitting the center part of your
Q. This grants true damage and applies your passive (which heals you and applies % Max HP damage).
Q
Q Hitbox Awareness: The Q hitbox is actually slightly larger than the indicator suggests and can hit enemies that are literally standing on top of or slightly behind Gwen.
Buffer Q Through CC: Learn to buffer your
Q during enemy crowd control (CC) effects (like a Jax stun or Camille E stun). This allows you to still deal damage while locked down.
Minion Execution: Q executes minions that are 20% HP or below. It is often better to auto attack caster minions once before using Q, as the Q often leaves them at 1 HP otherwise.
W
W Baron Trick: When rushing Baron, stand in the corner of the pit and use W to block the Baron's damage, making the objective clear much faster.
E
E Cooldown Management: Ensure you land at least one auto attack during the 4 seconds after using E. This refunds a portion of the cooldown.
E Wall Jump: E can be used to jump over pretty large walls, including those around the Raptors and Red buff camps.
R
R Patience: Do not feel obligated to shoot all three stacks of your ultimate immediately. Holding your R and waiting for your opponent to be in a position where they cannot Juke the final snips can be more beneficial.
