Master Tier Champion Guide
Cho'Gath is a versatile AP juggernaut who excels at scaling and controlling the battlefield. You should play Cho'Gath if you enjoy a champion who can adapt to various roles and build paths, from a full tank to a high-damage AP threat. His kit is designed around his ultimate, Feast, which allows him to grow in size and health by consuming enemies. Mastering Cho'Gath requires a deep understanding of his scaling potential and the ability to land his skillshots to control fights and execute enemies.
Infinite Scaling: Cho'Gath's ultimate allows him to scale infinitely, becoming a massive frontline tank with huge amounts of health.
Versatile Build Paths: He can be built as a full tank, an AP burst mage, or a bruiser, allowing him to adapt to the needs of his team.
Excellent Wave Clear: His abilities allow him to clear minion waves quickly, giving him priority in lane and the ability to roam.
Immobile: Cho'Gath has no dashes or mobility spells, making him vulnerable to ganks and kiting.
Skillshot Reliant: His primary forms of crowd control are skillshots, which can be difficult to land.
Weak Early Game: He is relatively weak in the early game and needs time to scale and build up his ultimate stacks.
The general plan should very rarely be to split push towers; instead, push out waves and rotate to make a pick.
Utilize the high movement speed (Shurelya's/Dead Man's) to sprint mid or side after clearing a wave and catch immobile targets (
E.g., Caitlyn, Ezreal) who are farming.
Arrive at objectives early (
E.g., Baron, Dragon, Herald) to abuse fog-of-war. Hiding in a bush and Q-ing the first enemy to walk in (1.5s knock-up + 2s silence) can instantly win a skirmish.
Cho'Gath is an Artillery Champion, not a diver. You must arrive early and observe the entire battlefield; do not tunnel on one target.
Do not waste Q on the primary enemy frontline (
E.g., Malphite) unless absolutely necessary. Instead, hold Q to stop the follow-up from the enemy backline, or chain CC off of an ally's stun.
W is a powerful silence. Save it for high-value threats and divers who rely on mobility/spells (Yone, Irelia, Pantheon, Javan). Avoid wasting it on tanks whose abilities are already used (
E.g., Alistar after combo, Malphite after R).
While still artillery, Tank Cho gains high HP (up to 8,000 HP late game) and can survive longer, but still needs to focus on CC utility.
HoB is the new standard, replacing Grasp in most matchups, as it provides a strong Level 1 and enhances early game skirmishing power. This build is the standard choice, providing high mobility for map picks while still offering defensive stats.
Comet is used when HoB is difficult to utilize, mainly against high-range or hard-to-engage opponents. Used in matchups that are not interactive (Volibear, Malzahar) or when power farming/high CS style is prioritized.
Choosing Grasp locks you into going full tank or Rod of Ages tank. It is best utilized against other tanks (Malphite, Maokai, Gragas) or when the team needs a frontline. Buy an early resistance item (Warden's Mail or Negatron Cloak) before starting Heartsteel to avoid being too weak in volatile early lanes.
Core Combo (Auto-Attack Lead)
E
E
E
Q
W
REnsure you Auto → E first to guarantee HoB proc. Use Q to knock them up, then W just before they land to maximize CC duration.
QUse Q to counter enemy dashes (Yone Q3, Sylas E2) by Q-ing the ground just before they hit you. Hide Q animation by casting from bushes or fog-of-war.
WThe silence duration increases with rank (up to 2 seconds). It is a powerful skirmishing tool, but its mana cost is very high, so avoid scaling it until Level 4 unless all-in-ing. W → Flash can catch enemies off guard.
EIs an auto attack reset. Use E through the minion wave to trim the wave and poke the opponent simultaneously. E gives extra auto attack range.
RCC Buffer: R can be buffered through any CC (stun, knockup, etc.); Cho'Gath will avoid the CC at the end of the animation.
Priority over Stacks: Prioritize having R available for a fight or objective over min-maxing stack efficiency on small creeps.
Grubs: Cho can eat a single Void Grub to gain an ultimate stack and deny the Feats of Strength proc for the enemy team (though only one Grub will count as a neutral stack).
Execution Indicator: The ult indicator does not factor in the bonus damage from Axiom Arcanist (Axiom Arcanist damage must be calculated roughly).
