Master Tier Analysis

Your Win Condition

Your primary win condition centers around neutralizing Jax's early threat and using your superior level six power spike to rush key armor-shredding items. Firstly, you need to win the item race for boots. Boots provide necessary mobility, and whoever secures them first will be significantly stronger. Secondly, you need to capitalize on the fact that Jax's ultimate grants him a lot of armor. Your plan should involve building items like Black Cleaver (CLE) second because the armor shred is essential for enhancing your snowballing and defeating him in the 1v1, especially as a Bruiser. Itemization should focus on high damage early, potentially going for a build path like Eclipse into Cleaver. Finally, your power spike at Level 6 is a strength phase because Renekton's ultimate allows you to scale your damage off two sources—AD and AP—which makes melting Jax achievable. The goal is to maximize this advantage to prevent Jax from hitting his major mid-game power spikes like Trinity Force.

General Strategy

The core strategy focuses on respecting Jax's volatility, especially his E (Counter Strike), while maintaining distance and exploiting his long E cooldown. You must always be playing away from Jax's E. If Jax takes Grasp of the Undying, you must be careful, as he gets a lot of empowered auto-attack damage, especially when combined with his W (Empower Weapon). You need to be able to out-space him with your E. You should start the lane by taking E (Slice and Dice) first. This is critical because Jax's biggest strength is his Level 1, where he often starts E to try and zone you. By taking E, you can completely nullify his opening auto-attack trades and dash out of his E. For runes, taking Bone Plating helps mitigate his damage when he jumps on you, allowing you to survive the fights longer. Also, if Jax is running Ignite, you must play very safely, relying on the extra AD from Conqueror and Doran's Blade. Once the laning phase is over, your job is to simply shove waves and reset, playing for team fights and objectives like Dragon and Baron.

Trading Patterns

Trading against Jax requires precision in timing your abilities relative to his E. You must wait for him to commit before you unleash your full power. 1. Level 1 Trade: If Jax runs up aggressively (which he will do if he starts E), hold your E, then E out (dash once) to dodge his Auto attacks and ensure you get out of his E range. This allows you to win the opening exchange. 2. Using Q: When Jax is near the minion wave, you can look to spam Q to poke and chip away at his health. 3. The Double Dash vs. E: Jax's E cool down is about 17 seconds, which is roughly in accordance with Renekton's E. You must try to use your E to out-space his E. 4. W Timing is Everything: You should never use your Empowered W on Jax when you know he might have E up, especially if he is maxing E second, as this can lead to your death. The safest strategy is to wait until his E is finished before using your Empowered W. Mechanically, you can time your W to hit Jax exactly at the end of his stun, but this is extremely difficult and requires exact timing. 5. Avoiding Grasp: If you stand too much in the open, Jax gets free Q-Auto trades that proc Grasp of the Undying, which you must avoid.

Wave Management

Wave management is crucial for denying Jax resources and creating openings for early gold advantages. Utilizing the "Che recall" (third wave recall) is very strong if you have Ignite, as it allows you to reset and come back to lane with a damage advantage (like Long Sword) or combat boots. This immediately cuts out Jax's early game advantage. Once you have priority, freezing the wave on your side of the lane is highly effective, as it denies Jax farm and experience and creates guaranteed kill windows. If you are ahead, keep the wave on your side and force him to approach you. If you are ahead and Jax TPs to base, you can force him to use his TP or lose the wave by pushing it towards his tower and then pulling it back towards your side for a freeze. Avoid randomly tanking damage from stacked minion waves, as this can severely hurt your overall health pool, setting you up for an all-in from Jax.

Their Win Condition

Jax's win condition is predicated on surviving the early game, scaling into his major item power spikes, and forcing Renekton into mistakes. Jax wins by out-scaling Renekton. If he can survive and secure items like Trinity Force, he hits his strongest point, and Renekton's job shifts from fighting him to merely shoving waves and influencing the map. He wins by isolating Renekton and capitalizing on positioning mistakes, particularly post-Level 6. If Renekton stands in front of Jax and Jax has minion superiority, Jax can look for an all-in, utilizing Grasp procs and his ultimate for free hits and massive damage. If Jax opts for Ignite, it makes the early game much more dangerous for Renekton. He wins if Renekton misplays his W and uses it when Jax's E is still active, rendering Renekton useless in the trade and potentially leading to death.
